Caerphilly Castle, South Wales
This is one of the great Medieval castles of western Europe, the largest in Britain after Windsor, and one of the first truly concentric castles in Britain. This and its extensive use of water for defence at the time of its building in the late 13th century make it a masterpiece of military planning.
The West Tower had been left in disrepair for several centuries so, after extensive research, CADW took the decision to introduce a new oak-turreted roof structure complete with a stone roof and lead gutters. We used reclaimed stone tiles, locally-sourced Pennant Stone, laid on a hand-split, riven oak lath that followed the shape of the curving roof. On completion of the stone tiling the underside was torched in a traditional lime mortar.
