Dore Abbey, Herefordshire

Dore Abbey, Herefordshire
Large parts of this substantial structure date back to the Abbey's founding in 1147, though it was restored and added to in the 17th and 18th centuries. Giving it a new roof was a logistical challenge due to its size – nearly 800m2 of roof area. Such was the quantity of tiles needed, three separate local quarries were engaged to produce them. Each tile was shaped and dressed by hand. The stock of tiles built up gradually at a nearby farm, where they were checked and left outside over winter to test for frost resilience. In the spring we started drilling and grading the tiles into lengths ready for laying. We took measurements and drew up a batten plan to suit each unique roof slope. The roofs were then stripped, felted and battened, and the new tiles laid.
