St James' Church, Tedstone Delamere, Bromyard, Herefordshire

St James' Church, Tedstone Delamere, Bromyard, Herefordshire
  • Client: St James' PCC
  • Architect: Hook Mason Ltd, Hereford
  • Project Value: £80K
  • Role: Principal Contractor
Nestled into a picturesque hillside a couple of miles north of Bromyard, this quaint, 12th Century church commands stunning views across the West Midlands Plain to the Malvern and Cotswold hills. Access is by a narrow footpath that runs for several hundred yards through ancient parklands of Tedstone Court, to which the church belonged until recent times. Tedstone Court granted permission for vehicle access through the meadow, which was very kind as we had several 20-ton loads of stone to deliver. That would have been a lot of work by wheelbarrow! And we were very fortunate to have a dry spring and summer.

The nave and chancel roofs were stripped, the roof slopes felted and battened prior to the handmade clay tiles being relaid. Repointing and stone repairs followed to the nave and chancel gables and the vestry chimney stack was dismantled and rebuilt with a mixture of ashlar and Random Forest of Dean green stone. The salvageable cast iron hoppers, gutters and downpipes were sandblasted and repainted and the shortfall made up with new cast iron fixtures.

The final part of the scheme was to be a complete new storm and French drain system around the perimeter of the church but, due to savings made on the project, we were also able to carry out traditional lime plaster repairs to the nave ceiling, followed by redecoration.
