St Catwg’s Church, Gelligaer, Glamorganshire

St Catwg’s Church, Gelligaer, Glamorganshire
  • Client: St Catwg's PCC
  • Architect: Steven Knott, Ferrier Partnership, Cardiff
  • Project Value: £184K
  • Role: Principal Contractor
St Catwg’s Church is notable because its namesake, Catwg (Cadoc in English), was born in and spent his early years in the parish. A founding figure of British Christianity, Catwg Ddoeth (Cadoc the Wise) spent his life preaching and establishing monasteries in Cornwall, Scotland and Brittany. These were places of worship but also of learning and scholarship, and were forerunners of what later came to be called universities. He is said to have been martyred at the hands of Saxon invaders near what is now Daventry.

We were invited to tender for this project because the architect identified our expertise in stone roofing. The works comprised renewing the slate roof over the nave, chancel and vestry and repairing and replacing roof structural timbers.

As is typical of ancient churches, exterior space was a problem. The large number of grave stones in the churchyard gave us nowhere to store the tiles, so we made the scaffold some 30 feet wide so the whole of the works could be contained on one working platform.

The opportunity was taken to introduce secret lead gutters to the parapet abutments. The chancel arch wall was found to be compromised by some recent inappropriate work so we carefully dismantled the wall and rebuilt it to its original dimensions using Pennant random stone from a local quarry. Finally, new cast-iron gutters and downpipes were fitted.
