St Alkmund's Church, Shrewsbury

St Alkmund's Church, Shrewsbury
  • Client: St Alkmund's PCC
  • Architect: Arrol & Snell Ltd, Shrewsbury
  • Project Value: £185K
  • Role: Principal Contractor
Of Saxon origin, St Alkmund’s has been much repaired and extended over the centuries. In the summer of 2008, we undertook substantial renovation and conservation in order to preserve the integrity of the building. The roof was re-slated in new Penrhyn slate; we stabilized the east gable using structural resin, steel anchors and steel plates; lead gutters were replaced and the parapet walls protected with lead cladding. Masonry work included stone replacement and Keim repairs to exterior faces of the parapets.

This project was innovative in that the architect introduced photovoltaic panels onto the roof structure. Positioned unobtrusively behind the parapet walls and, therefore, invisible from the ground, the solar panels provide the church with all its energy needs, with the surplus being sold back to the National Grid.
