Preaching Cross, St. Mary's Church, Burford

Preaching Cross, St. Mary's Church, Burford
  • Client: PCC of St Mary's Church
  • Architect: Richard Lamb, Hook Mason Ltd, Hereford
  • Project Value: £8K
  • Role: Main Contractor
In the Medieval period and earlier, preaching crosses were erected all over Britain to designate areas where the community could gather outdoors to hear sermons, or official proclamations, or even news brought by travellers from afar. Sadly, in England, not many are left standing.

Dating back to the 14th Century, this preaching cross at St. Mary's Church, Burford is a rare and fine example, featuring impressively ornate carvings on the cross head.

Prior to this Heritage Lottery-funded restoration, the monument was in grave danger. It was first repaired in 1867 by Baron Northwick, in memory of his sister, the Hon. Harriet Rushout. It remained untouched then for nearly 150 years, during which time the weather took its toll. The shaft and base stone had eroded to the point where the structure could have toppled at any moment.

We effected a very careful intervention. First, a sturdy scaffold was erected to encompass the cross. We then encased the cross head in a timber basket lined with soft foam so we could raise it on pulley blocks and set it aside. This allowed us to remove the rest of the shaft and lay a new base stone. With some repointing of the lower plinths, we rebuilt the shaft using pinning and resining techniques between each original stone section. Our final task was gradually to lower the cross head back into position on the last slender dowel, where it sits in splendour now, secure for another two centuries at least.
